PRINCETON ACM / IEEE-CS CHAPTERS
DECEMBER 2022 JOINT MEETING

A Half-Century’s Evolution in Immersive Learning

The first full week of December is ACM’s CSEdWeek (https://www.csedweek.org), and our chapter always has an education-related special program to celebrate.

Research on immersive media for learning now spans five decades and many types of interfaces. This big-picture talk looks at lessons learned over this time period, including more than three decades of designing and studying various forms of XR. All of us now stand at the threshold of a golden-age of powerful, affordable experience-on-demand. The next five years offer many opportunities for advances that deepen learning and enhance assessment.

Chris Dede is a Senior Research Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, after 22 years as a professor at Harvard. His fields of scholarship include emerging technologies, policy, and leadership. Chris is also a co-founder of the Silver Lining for Learning initiative (https://silverliningforlearning.org). In 2011,
Chris was named a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association. Chris has been a co-editor of many books on education, including Teacher Learning in the Digital Age (2016); Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Realities in Education (2017); Learning engineering for online education (2018); and The 60-Year Curriculum: New Models for Lifelong Learning in the Digital Economy (2020).
