We are pleased to announce a monthly series of CS Teacher Professional Development for Secondary Teachers (grades 7-12) with the support of Jumpstart Philly CS4All, funded by an NSF grant. January through June, we will host a Saturday PD Event focused on a CS topic that is linked to PA CS Standards and the Praxis CS Teacher Certification Exam. This will be content teachers need to both teach students and to pass the certification exam.  The Praxis CS Teacher Certification Exam will be available by summer 2021.

Teachers joining these sessions will gain pedagogical and content knowledge for teaching computer science. Teachers are welcome to pick and choose based on topic, however, if you complete this series of learning events you will be prepared to take and pass the new Praxis CS Teacher Certification Exam in summer 2021!

The Saturday PD will start at 9 am and run until 12:15 pm on Zoom. You must pre-register to get the Zoom link. Materials and recordings will be made available to all registered participants after the event. The dates and topics are below:

January 23 - Teaching Binary and Data Representation with Dr. Pirmann
February 20 - Impacts of Computing on People with Dr. Popyack
March 20 - Spring Symposium - Session on Teaching Algorithmic Design with Pseudocode
April 17 - Ethics in Computing with Dr. Payton
May 15 - Java, pt 1 with Steve Earth
June 12 - Networks and Internet with Omar Ali

There are three days of in person summer PD planned, however, we are prepared to remain virtual if need be. The topics covered in the summer PD include Java, Object-Oriented Programming, Search and Sort, Data Analysis, Cybersecurity, Computing Systems, Modeling and Simulations.

You may register for these events right here on our site, under Events. The cost is free to members and $5 each for guests. CSTA continues to offer a free membership level. Teachers working for the School District of Philadelphia can use the coupon code SDP to waive the fee.
